Graduated Tax Petition - Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin

Graduated Tax Petition

We, the undersigned, oppose the Democrats' Graduated Income Tax proposal. Under current Illinois law, the individual income tax rate will be 3.75 percent in 2015. Under a new plan, however, a higher 4 percent rate kicks in for people earning just $18,000. That income tax rate targets Illinois’ working class.

The last temporary tax increase produced no reduction in spending. I am at a point in my life where I could become a resident of another state. Democrats do not have a record of running anything that should make one proud long term.

Illinoisan Milton Friedman had it right - Flat Tax. The progressive tax going after the rich and middle class for more operating funds smells of desperation. The flat tax tells the voters exactly how well the politicians are doing-going from 3% to 5% said a lot. Hedging on the mandate to go to 3-3/4% (still higher than 3%) says the governor is either bad with numbers or unrealistic or just needs votes. And the legislature was happy to oblige. How does a liberal state like Washington operate with no income tax and a sales tax not much higher than Illinois? Are we continuing to do things wrong? Instead of Illinois hoisting its sails for loftier destinations (via companies and people wanting to come to Illinois), the masts are empty, and we are hoping we don’t crash on the rocks. Let’s show that Illinois has some gumption and stick with the flat tax.

Thank you, Joe, for your efforts.

I don’t think I’m alone when I say additional taxes should mean improved services. We aren’t getting our money’s worth now.

The Madigan clan has to be stopped!

Please help Illinois shed its cloak of being the Detroit of states.

Working class people in Illinois can barely prosper and all springfield wants to do is increase the BURDEN . As for people LEAVING this state GOOD BYE!!!! A LARGE % of them are leaving BECAUSE their GOV. give-aways are are in DECLINE, and are going to states that will GIVE THEM MORE!!! The only reason there were here in the FIRST PLACE was the GENEROUS FREEBIES ILL. has provided. Some of which working people could not AFFORD!!
