Mulligan: Sales Tax Holiday

July 28, 2010

Des Plaines…Residents of the 65th District and across Illinois will be able to enjoy a sales tax holiday on certain school supplies, clothing and footwear from August 6-15 due to the passage of Senate Bill 3658.

The bill, which was signed into law earlier this month, will allow consumers to essentially pay 5% less in sales tax for qualifying purchases during the ten-day period wherever they shop. For example, in a community where the total sales tax rate is 9.75%, during the tax holiday period qualifying items can be purchased for a tax rate of 4.75%. In communities where the total sales tax rate is 6.25%, qualifying purchases can be made for the rate of 1.25%.

The sales tax holiday applies only to school supplies and certain types of clothing and footwear that would be purchased in preparation of the start of a new school year. School supplies would include binders, books, calculators, notebooks, crayons, pencils, pens and other items used during the school day by students. Lunch boxes, back packs, back-to-school clothes, athletic wear, swimsuits, rainwear and coats and jackets will also be considered qualifying purchases during the sales tax holiday, as will shoes, sandals, slippers and other footwear. Art supplies, reference books, shoes with cleats and computers are considered non-qualifying purchases.

A complete list of qualifying and non-qualifying items can be found at http://www.tax.illinois.gov/SalesTaxHolidayList.pdf, and additional information about the sales tax holiday can be found at http://www.tax.illinois.gov/SalesTaxHolidayQ&A.pdf.

“During a time of year when budgets are stretched thin due to back-to-school shopping, the sales tax holiday will make preparing for the start of a new school year a little bit easier,” said Mulligan. “I would encourage all parents to make their back-to-school purchases during this ten-day period.”
